Continuity and change of the major transfer site Hedeby/Schleswig during the 11th century AD

Program (PDF)

Since the beginning of 2012 the research project “Between the Vikings and the Hanseatic League. Continuity and change of the major transfer site Hedeby/Schleswig during the 11th century AD“ financed by the German Volkswagen foundation deals with the reasons why the older Viking period emporium of Hedeby shifted in the course of the 11th century AD on the opposite side of the Schleifjord, where the medieval civitas of Schleswig developed. It brings together the relevant archaeological materials
from the long lasting excavations at both places focussing on features from the later 10th to the early 12th centuries and analyses especially the functioning of both Hedeby and Schleswig as harbours for a long-distance trade and as production centres.

With several partners archaeometric research has been conducted analysing different handicraft activities (non-ferrous metals, glass) to understand changes and developments in technical skills and in the supply and use of raw materials.

The 11th century seems also important from another point of view: on the one side there are researchers dealing with the Viking period, whereas medieval archaeologists often look back from the later Hanseatic time. The project attempts to bridge this gap, which has influenced the research of Viking Hedeby and of medieval Schleswig.
